0</strong></p>\n<p>Please\, join our Chapter meeting on January 10 at Simp
kins Swim Center on 17th Avenue in Live Oak to learn about a very cool pro
gram: WASTE to WAVES! The meeting kicks off at 7:00 PM.</p>\n<p>Yes\, we’r
e talking about something positive to do with all that EPS foam packaging
that everyone gets in products they buy\, especially during the Holiday se
ason. Listen up now\, OK?</p>\n<p><strong>First thing to do: Collect All o
f Your Waste EPS Foam!</strong></p>\n<p>You probably got it when you bough
t a new TV\, computer\, or some furniture. Most cities don’t let you recyc
le this\, and our coast is no different. It just feels wrong to throw it i
nto the trash can. A much higher use for this foam is to turn it directly
into a new surfboard blank. That’s right: A NEW SURFBOARD BLANK!</p>\n<p>T
he program only accepts clean\, white\, Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam. T
his is exactly the same foam used inside EPS/epoxy surfboards\, and it can
be recycled many times into new EPS.</p>\n<p>Please learn exactly what ty
pes of foam can be donated\, and what types cannot. In essence\, it must b
e hard white foam used in packaging. If the foam has been used to hold foo
d\, or is soft or flexible\, we can’t make surfboards out of it..</p>\n<p>
<strong>TURN YOUR TRASH INTO SLASH!</strong><br />\nOur monthly chapter ge
neral meeting fill feature <em><strong>Sustainable Surf’s Waste to Waves p
rogram</strong></em>. The program collects EPS polystyrene and turns it in
to surf boards. VERY COOL!</p>\n<p>Chapter Chair Dustin Macdonald welcomes
guest speaker Sustainable Surf Co-Founder and former SF Chapter volunteer
\, Kevin Whilden</p>\n<p>www.wastetowaves.org</p>\n<p>As many of you remem
ber our Santa Cruz Chapter has long been involved with the polystyrene iss
ue and\, like you\, we are deeply frustrated that no way to recycle this s
tuff exists in our county through normal channels.<br />\nIn fact\, we are
still working on strengthening polystyrene food container bans around the
area. <strong><em>Visit our meeting and sign a group letter to the Santa
Cruz County Board of Supervisors in support of upgrading the existing poly
styrene ordinance. Surfrider makes is EASY for you to get active!</em></st
rong></p>\n<p>While large scale recycling of polystyrene (“Styrofoam”) pro
ducts is not available in Santa Cruz or nearby counties\, this limited pro
gram is an excellent solution for the disposal problem in the mean time\,
and we urge all of you to give it a go!</p>\n<p>Remember: No food-stained
items\; No “peanuts”\; only clean uncontaminated EPS blocks.</p>\n<p>Hear
the drill at our everyone-invited meeting\, and learn where local drop-off
spots are.</p>\n<p><strong>HELP GET THIS STUFF OFF OUR BEACHES\, OCEANS\,
AND WAVES AND OUT OF THE LANDFILL\, TOO!</strong></p>\n<p><a href='http:/

d blanks\, and they love how the recycled blanks surf.</p>\n<p>Surfers and
visitors to the contest site should bring their waste polystyrene foam\,
also known as styrofoam or EPS.  Reef is operating a special Waste to Wave

cycled.  If the foam is food contaminated\, discolored\, or not white\, it
